- Online Money Games are Prohibited: The bill imposes a complete ban on any online game where players deposit money with the expectation of a monetary reward. This includes popular fantasy sports, poker, rummy, and other card games where real money is at stake. The government’s stance is that these games are a public health risk, leading to addiction, financial ruin, and other social and psychological issues.
- Tough Penalties for Violations: The law isn’t just a slap on the wrist. It outlines severe penalties for platforms and individuals who violate the ban. Companies and promoters found offering these games could face imprisonment for up to three years and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore. Even advertising such games can lead to a two-year jail term and a fine of up to ₹50 lakh.
