Top 5 Rice Producing States in India: Telangana Leads the Way!
New Delhi: Here’s some good news for every rice lover in the country — India’s rice bowl is brimming fuller than ever, thanks to record production in 2023-24! And this year, there’s a new star on top — Telangana has claimed the crown as India’s biggest rice producer, showcasing how good planning and dedicated farmers can transform a state’s fortunes.
The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s latest Third Advance Estimates put India’s total rice output at a record-breaking 136.70 million tonnes (1367 Lakh Metric Tons – LMT) this year. That’s a healthy rise from last year’s 135.75 LMT — and Telangana’s phenomenal rise played a big part in this growth story.
So, who made it to the top five? Let’s take a look:

1️⃣ Telangana: 16.63 million tonnes (166.31 LMT)
In an inspiring leap, Telangana now contributes over 12% of India’s rice! This impressive performance has pushed it ahead of traditional giants, thanks to massive irrigation projects, farmer-friendly policies, and smart farming methods.
2️⃣ Uttar Pradesh: 15.72 million tonnes (157.22 LMT)
UP remains a solid powerhouse, securing the second spot with about 11.5% of the national share. Its vast, fertile fields continue to feed millions across the country.
3️⃣ West Bengal: 15.12 million tonnes (151.18 LMT)
Known as the “Rice Bowl of India” for decades, West Bengal stays in the top three, adding more than 11% to the national basket despite a slight dip this year.
4️⃣ Punjab: 14.39 million tonnes (143.90 LMT)
Punjab’s highly efficient farming systems keep it strong at fourth place, contributing over 10% of India’s rice production.
5️⃣ Odisha: 10.13 million tonnes (101.30 LMT)
Odisha rounds out the top five with steady growth, adding a valuable 7.4% share to India’s rice reserves — a testament to the state’s consistent push to boost paddy cultivation.

Telangana’s steady rise stands out — it has more than 60 LMT higher output than five years ago, showing how focused efforts can yield big results.
🔑 What Powered Telangana’s Growth?
Telangana’s new position as India’s rice leader isn’t by chance. Here’s what made it possible:
💧 Irrigation Revolution: Projects like the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme and tank rejuvenation under Mission Kakatiya have guaranteed year-round water, so farmers aren’t at the mercy of monsoons anymore.
🌾 Expanded Cultivation: Reliable water means more farmland under paddy, often two crops a year!
👨🌾 Farmer-First Support: High-quality seeds, modern methods, and government backing have helped farmers grow more rice profitably.
🌱 Smart Farming: Telangana’s farmers balance traditional wisdom with new, high-yield varieties for better productivity.
☀️ Favourable Climate: Add all this to naturally rice-friendly weather, and it’s a winning combo!
A Win for Everyone
Telangana’s achievement is more than just a state success — it strengthens India’s food security, ensures rice is plentiful, and brings prosperity to farmers.
So next time you enjoy a plate of steaming rice, remember: it’s thanks to our hardworking farmers and smart planning that India’s rice bowl stays full!.
