RAJ AND UDDHAV THAKERY SITTING TOGETHER

In a historic moment on July 5, 2025, long-lost cousins Uddhav Thackeray, leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), and Raj Thackeray, head of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), came together after nearly two decades. Their reunion took place at a joint rally in Worli, Mumbai, under the banner of ‘Awaj Marathicha’ (Voice of Marathi). The rally marked the victory of advocates for the Marathi language, as the Maharashtra government reversed a contentious policy that sought to make Hindi a mandatory third language in primary schools, a decision vehemently opposed by both Thackeray cousins.

During the event, Uddhav hinted at the possibility of a political alliance, stating, “We have joined forces to remain united,” and underscored their shared commitment to safeguarding Marathi culture and securing power in the Mumbai civic body as well as the state of Maharashtra. Raj echoed this sentiment, giving credit to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for unintentionally bringing them together, remarking, “Fadnavis achieved what even Balasaheb Thackeray couldn’t.” He criticized the Hindi language policy as an attempt to sow division between Mumbai and Maharashtra, particularly given the prevalence of English in the state’s legal system.

The rally witnessed the presence of influential figures such as Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule, and others. A heartwarming moment occurred when Uddhav and Raj’s sons, Aaditya and Amit Thackeray, embraced each other, symbolizing a reconciliation in both family and political ties. Nevertheless, the gathering faced backlash from BJP leaders, with Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane describing it as a “jihadi and anti-Hindu congregation” with the intent to sow discord, and Union Minister Chirag Paswan labeling it a “desperate ploy” to regain political relevance ahead of local elections.

This reunion, spurred by the language dispute, has sparked speculation about a potential realignment in Maharashtra’s political landscape. While some interpret it as a strategic move to harness Marathi sentiment for electoral advantage, only time will reveal the true implications of this momentous occasion.
